In November 2024, China’s State Council released the official holiday calendar for 2025 (link in Chinese), announcing significant changes effective January 1, 2025. The most notable reforms include two additional public holidays, as well as longer breaks for Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) and Labor Day. These changes are being implemented to optimize rest periods and boost domestic tourism.
Below are the key national holidays for 2025, their dates, durations, and any working day adjustments.
Most significant changes for 2025
- Two Additional Public Holidays: Under the revised guidelines, the total number of public holidays for all citizens increases by two.
- Extended Spring Festival Break: The Spring Festival, China’s most important holiday, expands to an eight-day break.
- Extended Labor Day Holiday: The Labor Day break becomes five days long.
- Refined Holiday Arrangements: With the reforms, weekends are utilized more flexibly to create longer consecutive rest periods, reducing scattered days off.
Public Holiday Schedule in China 2025
1. New year’s day
- Ajankohta: 1. January (Wednseday)
- Duration: 1 day
- Arrangements: No working day adjustments.
In 2025, New Year’s Day falls on a Wednesday, and it is a simple one-day holiday without weekend arrangements.
2. Spring Festival (Chinese New Year)
- Dates: January 28 – February 4 (Tuesday to Tuesday)
- Duration: 8 days
- Compensatory Working Days: January 26 (Sunday), February 8 (Saturday)
The longest holiday of the year is the Spring Festival, when families gather together. In 2025, it is eight days long. As is often customary, certain Saturdays and Sundays are designated as working days around the holiday to offset the additional days off.
3. Qingming festival
- Dates: April 4–6 (Friday to Sunday)
- Duration: 3 days
- Arrangements: No working day adjustments.
The Qingming Festival falls on a weekend and remains three days long. During this time, families visit their ancestors’ graves to pay their respects.
4. Labor day
- Dates: May 1–5 (Thursday to Monday)
- Duration: 5 days
- Compensatory Working Day: April 27 (Sunday)
The longer, five-day Labor Day holiday offers a good opportunity to travel or relax. To make this possible, one Sunday before the holiday is designated as a working day.
5. Dragons boat festival
- Dates: May 31 – June 2 (Saturday to Monday)
- Duration: 3 days
- Arrangements: No working day adjustments.
During the Dragon Boat Festival, traditional dragon boat races and zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) take center stage. In 2025, this holiday becomes a three-day break.
6. Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day
- Dates: October 1–8 (Wednesday to Wednesday)
- Duration: 8 days
- Compensatory Working Days: September 28 (Sunday), October 11 (Saturday)
In 2025, the Mid-Autumn Festival falls close to the National Day “Golden Week” holiday, resulting in an eight-day consecutive break. This “super holiday” encourages longer trips and family gatherings. As with the Spring Festival, additional working days are scheduled before and after the holiday period.
Additional observations
- When a holiday falls on a Wednesday: Under the new rules, if a public holiday falls mid-week and does not coincide with other holidays, it is generally observed as a single day off.
- Longer holiday periods in special cases: Major holidays are now designed to provide longer, consecutive breaks, allowing people to enjoy more meaningful rest periods instead of a single isolated day.
- Other Holidays and Commemorative Days: Certain groups (for example, women on International Women’s Day or children on Children’s Day) have their own shorter holidays. These half-day or single-day holidays do not usually require working day adjustments.
